Designs to Shine
We were talking recently with the staff at Designs to Shine about what's been going on in the past year. The list of projects they are working on is staggering.
They're still working on on the new couture evening fashions line, just launched a fabulous new website, mulling decisions for a new blog and making lots of wonderful costumes for dancers! Not only are Designs to Shine fashions seen at ballroom competitions around the world, once again, they will be costuming ballroom dancers for the Season 10 of So You Think You Can Dance. Recently, Fantasy Guild Tours, another one of their ventures, traveled in first-class style to Blackpool. Late last year they led a group on safari through East Africa.
Doré, located in Southwest Florida, was founded in 1979 to serve as costumers to the Ballroom Dancing Industry. Under the leadership of Head Designer and owner, Dorothy Salcedo, they created gowns for performances in front of Heads of State, lavish shows and champions of the dance floor.
Dawn Smart joined Doré in 1999 and changed the costuming to a more commercial and broader appeal. With the advent of dance shows on television, Doré accepted the challenge to reshape overall ballroom costuming to a modern, more luxurious and sparkling level. In 2007 Smart bought the company with the intention of growing its potential even further. Since then, in addition to designing and dressing hundreds of clients and sponsoring over 40 professional couples, including world champions, Doré has dressed “So You Think You Can Dance “on FOX, provided costuming for the newly released ”Montecito Ballroom” on A&E, designed and dressed the Knicks City Dancers, done costuming for several movies and designed for the upcoming Off Broadway show “Sway”, starring Max Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, and Val Chmerkovskiy from “Dancing With the Stars”. Doré now employs over 30 in-house couture and sample makers and is worth over 4 million a year in sales.
In 2012, Smart realized there was a gap in the fashion world that Doré could fill. Starting with an all evening couture collection, Doré stepped into mainstream fashion with a runway show. In 2014, Smart added separates and created the first RTW collection. Utilizing jerseys and crepes, the collection was designed to give a woman confidence throughout the most important occasions of her life.

Irina's Fashions for Passion
A former aircraft engineer, Irina Birukova puts now puts her aerodynamic skills to work for her coture ballroom clients. Attending the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) she found herself teaching her teachers. She then attended the Istituto Di Moda Burgo, in Milan, Italy, where she honed her already-impressive figure drawing skills and studied fashion design.
A professional dancer asked her if she would design a ballroom dance gown and she said yes. The rest is history.
Irina believes that a high-performance aircraft and high-performance ballgown are both about dynamics - speed and movement. "Flying is flying, regardless of whether it's in a plane or in a gown".
